In a significant move towards promoting gender equality within crime prevention efforts, the School of Criminal Justice Education (SCJE), in partnership with the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Biliran, held an impactful workshop entitled “Empowering Local Peacekeepers and the Community to be Gender Equal in Crime Prevention.” The event took place on April 12 at the Biliran Gymnasium, gathering 28 local peacekeepers, community representatives, and stakeholders for a day of training, dialogue, and capacity-building.
The initiative, aimed at fostering inclusivity and gender sensitivity among community peacekeepers, focused on the critical role of gender equality in creating a balanced and just approach to crime prevention. Through lectures, interactive discussions, and group activities, participants learned about recognizing and overcoming gender biases, as well as developing strategies that promote equal representation in local safety initiatives.
“Ensuring that both men and women are equally represented and empowered in community policing efforts is essential to achieving sustainable peace and order,” said a spokesperson from SCJE. “By addressing gender biases, we are taking steps towards a more inclusive approach to crime prevention, ensuring that all voices are heard and valued in the community.”
The workshop also underscored the importance of collaboration between local authorities and the community in fostering a safe and peaceful environment. LGU-Biliran officials pledged ongoing support, recognizing the project as an essential component of their Peace and Order programs. They emphasized that empowering individuals, regardless of gender, is key to establishing a secure and resilient community.
Participants left the event with new insights and a collective commitment to applying gender-sensitive approaches within their roles as peacekeepers and community members. Through these continuing efforts, SCJE and LGU-Biliran aim to inspire broader community involvement and create a safe environment for all.
