A new chapter of progress is unfolding for Brgy. Villa Cornejo, Kawayan, Biliran, as the “Community Empowerment through Science and Technology Interventions for the Economically Challenged Community” project was officially launched today. Led by Biliran Campus, in partnership with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Kawayan, the initiative aims to address pressing economic and environmental challenges through sustainable, science-driven solutions.

The project, designed to uplift economically challenged communities, focuses on biodiversity conservation and coastal resources management. Brgy. Villa Cornejo, a coastal barangay, faces issues of marine resource depletion and environmental degradation that impact local livelihoods. With most residents relying on fishing and small-scale coastal industries, these challenges have made it difficult for families to achieve economic stability.

This community empowerment initiative seeks to harness science and technology to address these environmental and economic concerns, providing locals with the knowledge and tools needed to manage and protect their coastal resources sustainably. Training and workshops will equip residents with best practices in biodiversity conservation, helping them become active participants in preserving their environment while improving their income sources.

The LGU of Kawayan expressed its commitment to supporting the project. “We see this partnership as a pathway to greater environmental stewardship and economic resilience. With the expertise of the Biliran Campus and the backing of DOST, we hope to create sustainable livelihoods that will benefit our community and future generations,” stated the LGU representative.

Through this multi-faceted project, Brgy. Villa Cornejo is set to benefit from practical solutions and training that align with science-based environmental management practices.
